MUSIC EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
Purpose of the Award:
The New Mexico Music Educators Association believes it is important to recognize
individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of Music Education in the
Schools of New Mexico.
Criteria and Guidelines for Nominating Candidates:
- Nomination consists of a resume of the individual's achievements and status as a Music
Educator in New Mexico Schools and two letters of support from students, parents, teachers
or administration familiar with the nominee's work.
- Must have demonstrated outstanding relationship with students, fellow music educators,
administrators, and community.
- Must have demonstrated a consistent record of high standards of teaching and promoting
music education in New Mexico schools.
- Must be teaching music in a New Mexico school at the time the award is to be received.
Resume Must Include:
- Number of years of service to music education.
- Evidence of quality of teaching, reflected by student and organizational awards.
- Identified contributions to the profession of music education.
- Identified service to NMMEA through active participation at the local District and State
Organizational level.
- List of honors and/or awards received.
Procedures for Nomination of Music Educator of the
Year:
- District NMMEA organizations at a regular meeting of its membership may nominate any
NMMEA member who is currently teaching music for consideration of the award.
- Each District NMMEA President will appoint a three member committee from that District's
membership to forward the proper resume form to the candidates, screen completed resumes,
letters of support, and recommend that district's nominations.
- Upon the determination of the candidate for the "Music Educator of the Year"
award, the district selection committee will prepare and forward six (6) copies of the
resume, six (6) copies of letters of recommendation, one photo of the nominee, and the
names and addresses of local newspapers and other media for publication purposes to the
immediate Past President no later than July 1, each year.
- The NMMEA Past President, chairman of the selection committee, will send a copy of the
candidate's resume and nomination to members of the state level committee.
- A standing committee for final selection will be composed of the five NMMEA
vice-presidents and the immediate NMMEA Past President, who will serve as selection
committee chairman. The committee will make the final selection and announce the
name of the recipient to the NMMEA Board of Directors at it's fall meeting.
- The State Selection Committee will select one recipient per calendar year from this
nomination.
The Award:
- A plaque engraved with the name of the award, year, and name of recipient.
- Publication of recipient's picture and appropriate recognition will be made in the
winter issue of the NEW MEXICO MUSICIAN.
- Public recognition will be made by presenting the award to the recipient at the annual
All-State general membership meeting. Lunch for the recipient and spouse will be at
NMMEA expense.
- Publication of the recipient's name will be included in the official All-State Music
Festival and In-service Conference program for at least ten years.
