Director guidelines and
Information:
-
How to figure fees owned for
the festival: The fee is $4 per student per event. Each
solo costs a $4 entry fee; and ensemble with six students
will cost $24.
-
All fees from a school must be
paid from previous District 6 festivals, before that
school is allowed to enter upcoming festivals.
-
All judges' copies of solo and
ensemble music must have the measures numbered.
-
All music should have the name
of your school written on the front of it, so it can be
returned to you.
-
Each performance room will
have a CD player in it. Have the student monitor help the
performer(s) set the volume before the performance begins.
-
Judges are asked not to lower
a rating of a student based on the selection of the solo
or ensemble material. However, rock music or Broadway show
music is considered to be inappropriate for this type of
festival. hopefully, students will perform classical
scared or secular solo and ensemble literature.
Sometimes new teachers to the
festival or teachers doubling as both band/choir directors
need a helping hand with literature selection. Below are
recommended solo resources that come with accompaniment
CD's.
-
English songs,
Renaissance to Baroque, arr. Walters & Solen,
published by Hal Leonard. Comes in High voice and Low
Voice.
-
The first Book of
soprano solos, The First Book of Mezzo-Soprano solos,
The first Book of Tenor solos, the first Book of
Baritone/Bass Solos, published by G. Schrimer/Hal
Leonard. there is also a "Second Book of ..." in the
same series.
-
Classical Contest solos
for Soprano, Classical contest Solos for
Mezzo-Soprano, Classical Contest Solos for Tenor,
Classical Contest Solos for Baritone/Bass,
published by Hal Leonard. These collections contain an
accompaniment CD that ALSO has Italian, Spanish, and
German pronunciation guides and ALSO have performances
by a professional singer of each piece.
-
Folk Songs for Solo
Singers, edited by Jay Althouse. Comes in Volumes
1 & 2, Medium High or Medium Low. Published by Alfred.
A great collection for younger voices.
General Judges’ Information
Central District VI Vocal Solo and Ensemble Festival
Note: This is information shared with judges before the
festival begins to strive for a more uniform judging
across the board throughout the day. This FYI is meant to
be read by directors to help
standardize student preparation for the festival, i.e.,
students should have music memorized, no
Xeroxed music should be given to
judges.
-
Give ratings of: I+, I, I-, II+, II, II-, III+, III.
Do not give ratings such as II++ or I--, etc.
The students can be discouraged or confused by
these ratings. Students who do not have the music
memorized will automatically be disqualified from a
“I” rating.
-
You have the discretion to give an AWARD OF MERIT to a
superb performance that would merit the highest
honor. There is no set number of these you may
award. In the past, judges usually gave out three or
four of these during the day. They may be given to
soloists or ensembles. This prestigious award is
indicated by your placement of a “star” on the
adjudication sheet.
-
Do
not judge the student’s performance on the quality of
the literature. Judge the student on the vocal
performance utilizing classical performing elements.
If you feel the quality of the literature was a
disadvantage to the student’s performance, you might
suggest tactfully to the student in the verbal
criticism that they perform a folk song or classical
selection next year.
-
BE
POSITIVE with all students. It is our goal that each
performer should leave the room feeling good about
music! Verbal critiques should be given in a
friendly, encouraging manner. You might pick one or
two things for the student to work on to correct. Try
to praise them for their courage in presenting a
solo. Find something positive to say about each
performance, even if it is, “I can tell you enjoy
music!” or “I can tell you love to sing!”
-
Try to stick with the time schedule. There will be
cancellations from all schools at the last minute.
We’ll try to keep you apprised of these throughout the
day.
-
You were selected because of your experience in
working with both middle and high school students.
Please keep in mind the developmental maturity of the
adolescent singing voice. Sometimes the voice may be
very “airy”, but within a year or two it will
solidify, mature, and focus. Observe and listen for
elements of good vocal production that are present in
the student(s) presentation.
-
Judges should not be given Xeroxed
music unless it is permanently out of print. If this
happens, send the student to the Festival Headquarters
in the chorus room. They will track me down and I
will try to help the student locate a printed copy of
their selection, regardless of school.
-
Please make sure the Ensemble judging sheet lists the
number of performers.
-
If
you have any concerns, please have your judge’s
student assistant find the festival host and this
person will attempt to address the problems.
-
A
student may have the room cleared for their
performance. The judge’s assistant will help with
that task.
-
Sometimes we forget how nervous students can be in
this setting. Please take that into account and be
encouraging.
-
Xeroxed copies of music may not be given to the judge
at this festival. Send the student to the festival
host if this occurs in your judging room and the host
will attempt to locate a hard copy of the piece. If a
hard copy cannot be found, the student forfeits the
performance.
