Los Alamos Public Schools are searching for a full (or part-time, based on availability of the applicant) band director to add to our team. This new position will share teaching, planning, administrative & clerical responsibilities with the three current directors at the elementary beginning and secondary (7-8 middle and 9-12 high school) levels. There are extracurricular activities (performances, once a week evening marching rehearsals, marching band camp, etc) connected to the classes that will require outside-of-school director presence. A stipend for these activities is included as compensation. The Los Alamos Public Schools Bands serve approximately 450 students from 5th-12th grades across seven school sites. The bands are active around the area and state, consistently sending students to honor bands and All State ensembles, MPA events, festivals and State Band. LAPS has twice in the past five years been awarded the NMMEA “District of Distinction” for its support of music education. Currently, three full time band directors share the majority of responsibilities for teaching 5th & 6th grade beginning bands, middle school concert & jazz bands, and high school concert, marching and jazz bands. Job assignments for this posting would mostly be elementary beginning band and team teaching at the middle and high school. Some jazz band teaching may be available based on the skillset of the applicant and scheduling availability. Qualified candidates will be able to: Effectively plan and conduct rehearsals, sectionals and performances Collaborate with other members of the band and music teams, administration, students, parents, the community and the band boosters Build positive rapport with student, parents, administrators and colleagues Demonstrate professional skills such as punctuality, organization, effective communication and cooperation While a reed specialist (single, double or both) is preferred, all candidates that believe they are qualified for this position should apply to LAPS.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Effectively plan and conduct rehearsals, sectionals, and performances
Collaborate with other members of the band and music teams, administration, students, parents, and the community
Build positive rapport with students, parents, administrators, and colleagues
Effectively and professionally communicate promptly with parents, teachers, admin, and co-workers
Demonstrate professional skills such as punctuality, organization, and cooperation
Provides for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts, and community events.
Maintains an accurate inventory of school-owned instruments.Controls the storage and use of school-owned equipment and materials; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required
Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students



EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
B.A. degree in Music Education, or a related field
A reed specialist is preferred but not required



CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Teaching Licenses from the New Mexico Public Education Department


LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret job-related materials to perform the required duties
Ability to communicate logically and coherently with co-workers, staff, and District personnel


REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; see and read a computer screen and printer material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech in normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
